Based on the manga series which spawned several anime series, live-action Japanese films and other such spinoffs, Netflix’s American take on Death Note attempts to stuff tomes of material into a 101-minute movie. At its best, we get the uber-creepy Ryuk- a death god who bestows our protagonist with a magic notebook capable of killing its subject with eerie precision. At its worst, it has cartoonish acting and mannerisms, probably highlighted most by the detective on the hunt for “Light”, the keeper of the Death Note. But don’t be confused, both Ann and Isaac think this Netflix Original is worth your time.
